AQUA! welcomes 2 new members from France and Croatia

We are pleased to introduce the Development Agency North located in Varaždin, as our first member in Croatia! Varaždin is located in northwestern Croatia, and benefits from a diverse array of water resources that are integral to its environmental sustainability and economic activities.

The Drava River is a significant surface water feature in the region, with reservoirs along its course, ensuring various uses: angling, leisure, water sports, flood control and irrigation, and hydropower production (Lake Varaždin, Lake Ormoz, Lake Dubrava).

DAN is a strong partner of the Varaždin region with regard to European funding and projects, notably about water resilience and climate adaptation.

Some territorial needs in terms of water and river management, concerning citizen empowerment and water governance have been identified as: raising awareness among citizens and youth about water protection.

Plaisance-du-Gers is a municipality located within the Adour basin, part of the Adour-Garonne hydrographic basin. It is drained by the Arros, the Larté, the Cassagnac canal, the Barne canal, and various small watercourses, forming a hydrographic network with a total length of 17 km.

Plaisance has a strong historical and cultural connection to water, evidenced by its stone bridge, water mills, lakes, swimming pool, historic tanneries, public baths, washhouses, water towers, locks, and underground channels.

It was the first electrified village in Gers, using hydroelectric power from the Rosapely plant in 1892. Though water power from its three water mills once generated electricity, efforts to revive hydroelectricity now face environmental challenges and reduced canal flows. The owners of the three water mills are exploring new purposes, focusing on culture and tourism. One water mill is part of the “City of the Organ” project, another is becoming a venue for social events and exhibitions, and the third operates as a summer holiday cottage. Energy and economic considerations are now central after years of inactivity.

Today, Plaisance faces significant water-related challenges, including flooding, pollution, drought, and declining water quality. Climate change intensifies these issues, affecting agriculture, tourism, and local infrastructure. As a response, Plaisance aims to become a resilient, water-conscious community, integrating more sustainable agricultural practices and promoting environmental awareness.
